Summary

An evaluation by NAU Archaeology revealed features of probable 11th century to modern date, including Late Saxon/early medieval activity, medieval industrial pits, medieval building remains and post medieval industrial areas including a 19th century narrow-gauge railway.

Twenty window samples taken in advance of evaluation work.
Late Saxon, medieval and post medieval deposits were encountered, and the potential for surviving organic remains on the site was noted.

May-July 2007. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed redevelopment site (Trenches 1-6). Context 1-606.
These trenches revealed features ranging from 11th century to modern in date.
Late Saxon to early medieval activity was recorded, including a well-preserved timber structure and leather off-cuts. Large numbers of 13th - 14th century medieval industrial pits relating to the textile industry were recorded, as well as 14th-15th century stone structures.
Brick foundations and preserved rail lines which once formed part of the Bullard's Anchor Brewery were also revealed, along with further 19th century industrial remains.

January 2008. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of two additional trenches (Trenches 7 and 8). Contexts 607-723.
This work revealed features of probable medieval to modern date. A single architectural fragment of decorated stone was recovered, which may be an example of Palladian-style masonry from the Duke of Norfolk's palace complex, demolished in the early 18th century.
