Full Description
January and April 2007. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new residential dwelling. Contexts 1-8.
Three shallow linear ditches were identified in section. One of these ditches was associated with a single sherd of 16th- to 18th-century pottery, but this may have been residual. A further sherd of post-medieval pottery was recovered from the topsoil in this area. These ditches were likely medieval to post-medieval field boundaries related to linear features visible as cropmarks in adjacent fields (NHER 36763 and NHER 39075).
Several shallow pits containing post-medieval and modern pottery, clay pipe stem fragments and clear bottle glass were identified at the eastern end of an area of topsoil stripping for a driveway. Metal-detecting in this area recovered four post-medieval copper alloy items: two buttons, a watch key, and a furniture fitting.
See report (S1) for further details. See also (S2).
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.65).
H. Hamilton (NLA), 26 Februry 2008. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 20 June 2019.
