February 2007. Borehole Survey.
Window sampling at proposed redevelopment site. Contexts 1-12.
Twelve window samples were extracted and examined, they provided clear evidence for the presence of archaeological features surviving beneath the site. Several features are probably deep, discrete pits, probably dug to extract sand and gravel during the medieval and post medieval periods. Three further samples also revealed evidence for deep features although these proved harder to characterise.
While it has been suggested that the city's Late Saxon defences may have crossed Magdalen Street at this point, no convincing evidence for their presence was revealed. Although a small quantity of Anglo Saxon pottery was recovered no features or deposits could be firmly dated to this period.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2013.331 and NWHCM : 2017.9).

June-July 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of footing trenches for two residential dwellings.
These trenches revealed little of archaeological significance, for the most part disturbing only relatively recent layers of dumped material.
The remains of two small post-medieval cellars were noted.
See report (S4) for further details. See also (S5).
