Summary

Excavations on Church Street have located a former cemetery which once extended beyond the walls of the current churchyard at St Mary's church (NHER 7469). Approximately 63 burials primarily dated to the medieval period have been recorded. The work has also confirmed that Church Street was a new road, built over part of the graveyard sometime between the 1500's and the 1700's. In 2011 a number of additional burials were recorded during the monitoring of groundworks to the south of St Michael's Church. The date of these burials is uncertain, although the are likely to predate the late 19th century.

Map

February-March 2007. Excavation.
From Context 1.
Excavations on Church Street have located a former cemetery which once extended beyond the walls of the current churchyard at St Mary's Church (NHER 7469). Approximately 63 burials primarily dated to the medieval period have been recorded. Preliminary analysis has identified indications of spinal disease, possible TB and osteoarthritis in the adult skeletons. The excavations have also confirmed that Church Street was a new road, built over part of the graveyard sometime between the 1500s and the 1700s.
Report awaited. See newspaper articles (S1) for further details. See also (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2010.77).
H. Hamilton (NLA), 12 June 2008. Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 11 May 2019.

May 2010. Geophysical Survey.
Ground penetrating radar survey.
The survey revealed a range of subsurface features mostly interpreted as masonry footings adjacent to the church, a shallow or void area of reworked ground and a number of modern service trenches.
See report (S3) for further details.

S. Howard (NLA), 19 August 2010.

September-October 2010. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new ground source heating system to south of St Michael's Church.
Twenty-seven inhumations were encountered. The 1st Edition Ordnance Survey 6" map (1886) shows pathways in these locations and therefore it is likely that these burials pre-date the late 19th century.
See report (S4) for further details.
