Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of undated, possibly medieval, field boundaries and trackways are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3834 1918. A series of linear and curvilinear ditch cropmarks are present on a roughly southwest to northeast alignment forming part of an incomplete field system. Three possible fields are present in the southern part of this group of cropmarks measuring up to 160m by 188m in size. Several of the ditch cropmarks have a distinctive S-shaped curve, suggesting that they were associated with medieval strip fields. These fields in the southern part of the group of cropmarks are crossed by an existing track (Hun’s Lake). A linear ditch continues the course of the track to a kink in a modern field boundary further to the northeast. Faden’s 1797 map (S4) shows the track following this straight route, rather than turning to the northwest as the modern track does.
Cutting across the eastern part of the field system is Goffins Lane. This road is not shown on Faden’s 1797 map but is marked on Bryant’s 1826 map (S5). The lane has a bend part way along its length and parallel ditch cropmarks, apparently representing a trackway, appear to lead from the bend to the north northeast. The northern end of this trackway overlap an area of undated cropmarks. It is likely that these trackway and field system cropmarks are of medieval to post medieval date.
