Summary

A possible bank or trackway of unknown date is visible as a faint crop- and vegetation mark, and perhaps as a slight earthwork, on aerial photographs taken in 1955. It leads to a group of buildings at its northeast end named ‘The Common’ on modern 1:2500 Ordnance Survey maps; its southern end is apparently cut by the present-day trackway. Its archaeological origin is uncertain, and it could simply represent a modern farm track. If it is old enough to be archaeologically significant, a medieval to post medieval date would be plausible.

Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A possible bank or trackway of unknown date is visible as a faint crop- or vegetation mark, and perhaps as a slight earthwork, on aerial photographs taken in 1955 (S1), between TG 3338 2882 and TG 3307 2864. Its archaeological origin is uncertain – it might simply mark a modern farm track – but if it is an ‘ancient’ feature, a medieval to post medieval date seems plausible. It may have been associated with the area now named ‘The Common’ on modern Ordnance Survey maps, which lies at its northeast end. This has been occupied by buildings since at least the 1840s; some are shown here on Honing Tithe Map (S2). The fact that the southern end of the feature is apparently cut by the trackway to its south may also be significant.
