Full Description
March 2007. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of topsoil stripping for the construction of new residences. Contexts 1-14.
This work recorded only modern features, including the likely remains of a small structure such as a shed in the central southern part of the area, a linear feature filled with modern debris which may be the remains of a grubbed-out hedge visible in aerial photographs, and the remains of a trench for a water pipe in the north central part of the area. However, two features were identified within a sewer trench excavated to the southwest of the site. A thick horizontal band of chalk was observed which appeared to have been truncated by the existing concrete manhole chamber and is likely a man-made feature, possibly 'constructed to form a consolidated surface.' At the extreme west of the sewer trench the truncated end of a chalk block structure was observed in the east-facing section. Although originally interpreted as a boundary wall it is more likely that this was part of the foundation for a building. Late post medieval pottery and domestic glazed china were recovered from the subsoil near the base of the cut for this structure.
