NHER 49271 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of an undated enclosure and field boundaries

Cropmarks of an incomplete rectilinear enclosure and field boundary ditches of unknown or medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3739 1840 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 36753. An incomplete rectilinear enclosure is located adjacent to the modern field boundary at TG 3730 1845. It has a trapezoidal plan with external dimensions of at least 37m by 33m. A linear ditch cropmark extends to its south on a parallel alignment to the modern field boundary. Linear and curvilinear ditches, probably field boundaries, are present on a roughly west to east alignment. These cropmarks overlap another rectilinear enclosure and field boundaries associated with it (NHER 36753). The date of these cropmarks is uncertain, but the similar alignment of some of the ditches to the modern field boundaries might indicate a medieval to post medieval origin. However, these ditch cropmarks do not relate to any of the field boundaries marked on the 1842 Ludham tithe map (S3).
