Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a large pond-like feature and associated channels, possibly an area of medieval peat cutting, are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3995 1691. The large feature is roughly sub-rectangular in plan with irregular edges and maximum dimensions of 135m by 109m. It is linked to the River Thurne by a curvilinear channel which feeds into a second broader channel, both of which are visible as cropmarks. This feature has the appearance of a small former broad and is likely to be an area of medieval peat cutting. This may have been part of Thurne Broad (NHER 13514), although Faden’s 1797 map (S2) appears to show it slightly further to the south.

March 2013
Google Earth imagery suggests that earthworks are extant on the site, as well as cropmarks.
K. Powell (HES), 11 March 2013.

Field visit following FEP consultation in advance of foot drains being redug on the site. Earthworks clearly present to the north of the iste leading to the river. Owner believes this is a relatively recent causeway across the wetter ground to transport bulk goods from the river. Part of the bank has been destroyed by works to the drains / river. The area thought to be part of a Broad is unclear on the ground but is certainly wet.
