Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of possible rectangular structures or buildings and ditches of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3981 1777. A possible rectangular structure is located in the centre of this group of cropmarks on a roughly north northwest to south southeast axis. It is defined by a cropmark of a narrow foundation trench and measures 15m long by 6m wide. It is possible that these are the remains of a timber building with a beam slot or post-in-trench construction. A L-shaped cropmark further to the south may define two sides of a similar structure. Although incomplete this second possible structure measures at least 13m by 6.5m in plan. It is possible that both of these cropmarks relate to timber buildings of unknown date. Buildings of this size and simple plan could date to any point between the Roman and post medieval periods. However, their location on an area of former marsh, labelled as ‘Ludham Marsh’ on Faden’s 1797 map (S2), might suggest a later rather than earlier date. Cropmarks of an unusual ring ditch with a rectilinear annexe are present to the north and could also relate to a structure (NHER 36130). Sections of linear and curvilinear ditch cropmarks are located around the possible structures, but their date and relationship to them is unknown.
