Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of ditched field boundaries, some of which are likely to be medieval to post medieval in date, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Hall Farm, Barton Turf (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 3542 2181.

A series of post medieval agricultural buildings, boundaries and lanes are marked on the 1839 Irstead Tithe map (S4) in the location of this site. Any cropmarks that definitely line up with mapped features have not been mapped. The cropmarks of the double ditched trackway appears to follow a similar course to a lane running from Hall Farm to Barton Hall to the north on the Tithe map. The cropmarks possibly mark the line of an earlier route to this lane. The cropmark track appears to have field boundaries associated and again these appear to pre-date the Tithe field system.

It seems likely that many of the fragmentary linear ditches mapped within this site also relate to medieval to post medieval field boundaries, however it is possible that some of the them are earlier in date.
