Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a rectilinear field system of probable medieval to post medieval date and undated field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3014 1982. A group of north to south aligned rectilinear fields are defined by ditch cropmarks. These fields form a rectilinear field system which has a similar alignment to the surviving post medieval field pattern. However, the majority of the cropmark boundaries are not shown on the Hoveton St Peter enclosure map (S3) or later maps. The southern part of the field system is crossed by the line of Hands Lane, but this road is not fully shown on Faden’s 1797 map (S4) suggesting that it is of a later date. The southern edge of the north to south aligned fields appear to join field boundaries on a roughly northwest to southeast alignment. It is likely that this field system is of medieval to early post medieval date. These cropmarks overlie a possible Roman field system (NHER 49180) and those of several ring ditches. One of the ring ditch cropmarks (NHER 36446) is located on one of the ditches associated with this medieval to post medieval field system suggesting that a barrow mound may have survived when the field system was laid out. Other undated field boundary and linear ditch cropmarks are also present in this group.
