Full Description
This enclosure and field system was previously recorded under NHER 8330.
March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a medieval to post medieval date enclosure and associated field system are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Catfield House, Catfield (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3842 2089. Numerous finds of medieval and post medieval material have been found on the site of this enclosure and fields (NHER 8330).
The main component of the site is a large trapezoidal enclosure centred on TG 3858 2097 and measuring 100m by 112m. The enclosure ditch is quite irregular and 2-3.5m across and has an entrance to the south. Another break in the ditch to the northeast may represent another entrance, although this may be a break in the cropmark response rather than an original feature. A number of internal subdividing ditches are also visible. The purpose of this enclosure is not known, although it is seems likely that it is a stock enclosure or something similar.
To the west of this are two further enclosures, also trapezoidal in shape, one is centred on TG 3838 2097, 85m by 60m, and the other is located at TG 3849 2084, measuring 55m by 40m.
The remainder of the site is characterised by field boundaries, which form rectangular fields and enclosed areas. A number of these boundaries are double ditched and are likely to represent trackways. Several of these field boundaries match up with those marked on the Ordnance Survey second edition map (25 inch, 1902-7) (S3).
S. Massey (NMP), 30 March 2007.
