Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of undated and multi-period ditches, representing enclosures and former field boundaries, some of which may be Roman in date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Sutton Mill, Sutton (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3962 2352.
The site consists of a dispersed group of fragmentary ditches, the majority of which appear to form former field boundaries. Some of these ditches may have defined enclosures. A number of the ditches mapped are roughly aligned either northwest to southeast or northeast to southwest and may be Roman in date, as other similarly aligned field boundaries have been recorded nearby (NHER 49321 and 49329-30), possibly associated with Roman finds (NHER 49321 and 49330).
Other elements of this site may be medieval to post medieval in date, such as the ditched boundary running intermittently from Bray Farm towards Sutton Mill. Although this linear does appear to pre-date the post medieval boundaries marked on the 1841 Sutton Tithe map (S3) and therefore may be earlier in date.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 March 2007.
