Summary

The area of land now known as Common Fen is marked as belonging to the ‘Trustees of the Poor’ on Smallburgh Enclosure Map of 1814, indicating that it was once a poor allotment. The possible outlines of former doles are visible as vegetation marks and perhaps slight earthworks on aerial photographs. Much of the site is now covered by woodland.

Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Common Fen (centred at TG 3509 2451) is marked on Smallburgh Enclosure Map (S1) as belonging to the ‘Trustees of the Poor’, indicating that it was once a poor allotment. It was presumably comparable to those known elsewhere in the Broads, such as East Ruston Allotment (NHER 22943). As at East Ruston, the possible outlines of former doles (presumably used for cutting surface peat) are visible on aerial photographs (S2), and their extent has been mapped.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 23 May 2007.
