Summary

Three probable bomb craters, presumably dating to World War Two, are visible as earthworks on 1940s aerial photographs. The bombs may have been dropped at random (not necessarily all at the same time) by an enemy plane before it made its return journey across the North Sea. At least one crater still survived as an earthwork in 1993.

Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Three probable World War Two bomb craters are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), in a line between TG 4224 1259 and TG 4282 1266. They were not necessarily all the product of a single raid, but the similarity in size between the central and eastern crater and their roughly linear alignment suggests that this may have been the case. The intended target might have been random or opportunistic, chosen by a plane seeking to make use of its remaining bombs or to jettison them before making a return journey across the North Sea. Aerial photographs taken in 1993 (S4) suggest that the southwesternmost crater still survived as an earthwork at that date.
