Full Description
May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The pillbox described below was previously recorded as part of NHER 14221.
Local information (see Acle parish file) suggests that a large pillbox (‘large enough to take six men’) was built on Acle green during World War Two. Only a possible structure, mound or area of disturbed ground, the extent of which has been mapped, is visible on the consulted aerial photographs (on (S1) at approximately TG 4015 1054). There is no clear evidence that this relates to the postulated pillbox, nor is there any evidence to support the suggestion that the pillbox was camouflaged by placing the Victoria Jubilee memorial milestone (NHER 14221) on its roof. (The polygon defining the site includes the memorial.) The site was included by the Defence Areas Project in their study of the Acle defences (S2).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 26 May 2007.
