Summary

A watching brief in 2007 revealed three ditches, one of which is Roman, probably dating from the second century AD, and two others which did not contain dating material but which are probably contemporary. The pottery assemblage recovered during this watching brief is significant, as it suggests an early to middle 2nd century date range for occupation here. This contrasts with previous work nearby which suggested that occupation of the fort and vicus commenced in the late 2nd century.

Map

June 2007. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new residential dwelling and associated detacted garage. Contexts 1-17.
Three ditches of probable Roman date were present within the house footings.
In total 28 sherds of Romano-British pottery were recovered from this site. The pottery assemblage from this site is significant as it suggests an early to mid-2nd century date range for the site's occupation, which contrasts with previous work undertaken in Brancaster which has suggested that occupation of the fort and vicus commenced in the late 2nd century. This adds weight to the argument that there may have been earlier antecedents to the vicus and fort at Brancaster (NHER 1004).
A 20th century summerhouse incorporating part of a railway carriage was also recorded at this location.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.303).
