Full Description
June 2007. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of excavation of trench for new IT link between Norwich Lower School and Cathedral Close. From Context 1.
In the gardens of Abbeyfield a possible earlier garden or boundary wall was uncovered. In addition, two walls were found on the edge of Life's Green. One of these is thought to be the foundations of a building known as Guybon's tenement, built around 1688. To the north-east of this wall a brick-lined drain was uncovered, with interesting capping bricks which have been identified as 17th century window mullions. The route of the trench was altered to avoid these foundations.
Finds from the site include a 12th century voussoir which appears to have been burnt, along with two fragments of 13th to 14th century brick, one piece of glazed medieval roof tile and one sherd of 15th to 16th century pottery.
See report (S1) for further details.
