Map

July 2006. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
The part of the peninsula on which the site is located lay outside the town wall - between it and the sea - in an area which was apparently marginal land and had still not undergone extra-mural development by 1799. Any build up of archaeological stratigraphy on previous gound surfaces is likely to be slight except perhaps for 19th century overburden and generally, archaeological potential is more likely to consist of cut features such as pits, ditches, wells, etc. possibly including the edge of the town moat/ditch.
See report (S1) for further details.
J. Allen (NLA), 31 May 2007.

August 2007-February 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks carried out during construction of extension to the Market Gates Shopping Centre. Contexts 1-30 used.
Only post-medieval and modern features were revealed. A single residual flint flake was recovered, which is probably prehistoric but cannot be dated more closely. Other finds recovered included a single sherd of medieval pottery and a number of post-medieval objects.
See report (S2) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.86).
