Summary

Multi-period field boundaries and probable drainage ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Some fit the pattern of enclosure depicted on historic and modern maps, and are likely to be of medieval to post medieval date. Although more than one phase of activity appears to be represented, there is no evidence that any of the cropmarks pre-date this period.

Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Linear and curvilinear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 3322 2336. More than one phase of activity appears to be represented, but there is no evidence that any of the cropmarks pre-date the medieval period. Some of the ditches, particularly those visible on the western side of the site, are likely to be field boundaries of medieval to post medieval date. One, which may correspond with a boundary depicted on Smallburgh Enclosure Map (S5), seems to overlie a cropmark ring ditch, NHER 36761, and was previously recorded under that number. Several of the features on the eastern side of the site may have originated as drainage ditches, including the sinuous field boundary depicted on the Enclosure Map and visible between TG 3344 2374 and TG 3339 2350. The archaeological origin of some of the other elements is less certain.
