Full Description
September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a dispersed group of multi-period and undated ditches are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Low Common Lane, Wheatacre. The site is centred on TM 4625 9488. These cropmarks are located in the area of two possible phases of undated and fragmentary fields of possible late prehistoric to Roman date (NHER 44965, 45228). All overlain by a series of post medieval field boundaries (NHER 44893). The cropmarks recorded under this multi-period site do not appear to fit into any specific phase. A similar area of multi-period cropmarks have been recorded to the northwest to Low Common Lane (NHER 44891) and to the east (NHER 44985). Without further evidence it is impossible to offer any worthwhile interpretation of these features. Additional aerial photograph material or archaeological excavation would be needed to investigate this area further.
The majority of the cropmarks are located within the western and eastern ends of the site. Most of the cropmarks consist of fragmentary ditches and linear features, some of which run parallel to one another and may represent double ditched boundaries or trackway segments, such as at TM 4632 9467 and TM 4607 9508.
