Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of multi-period ditched cropmarks, the majority of which are probably field boundaries of unknown date, is visible on aerial photographs to the north of Burgh Road, Burgh St Peter (S1-S4). The site is centred on TM 4798 9415. This record deals with all of the fragmentary unphased and undated cropmarks largely located to the north of Burgh Road. The cropmarks of a series of post medieval enclosures and field boundaries (NHER 44929) have been recorded separately.
The majority of the cropmarks of too fragmentary to warrant any discussion or interpretation. It is likely that most of the linear ditches relate to field boundaries dating to the late prehistoric to Roman periods. None of them show any obvious link to the more coherent settlement and field systems mapped to the south (NHER 16005, 44875 and 44880-1). Double ditched linear features are visible at TM 4787 9429, TM 4766 9432 and TM 4793 9414 and TM 4812 9401 and these are likely to represent fragments of trackways. Additional archaeological features may be visible at around TM 4803 9425 and TM 4830 9395, although due to a possible confusion with geological cropmarks, these were not mapped.
S. Massey (NMP), 10 August 2006.
