Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible trackway of unknown, but possibly late prehistoric date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Hall Farm, Burgh St Peter (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 4838 9361. These cropmarks sit within a wider spread of multi-phase cropmarks, see NHER 44886 for details. The trackway shows no obvious relationship with other cropmarks in the area, which have been interpreted as enclosures and fields of Iron Age to Roman date (NHER 44880-1). It is possible that this trackway is an earlier feature possibly Bronze Age to Iron Age in date.
The site consists of two parallel ditches, running from approximately TM 4835 9363 to TM 4842 9360, 16m apart. The ditches are curvilinear in plan. The archaeological origin of these cropmarks is not certain. The cropmarks exhibit numerous geological features and it is possible that these curvilinear parallel marks are geological in origin. This may also be suggested by the fact that the ditches follow the curve of band of differential material producing a cropmark response to the immediate south (S2).
