NHER 44921 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of undated ditches and field boundaries

August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of undated ditches and field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the north of the Old Rectory Common Farm House, Burgh St Peter (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 4815 9312. The site consists of a series of linear ditches are aligned NE-SW or NW-SE and are probably fragments of a former field system or similarly enclosed area. The double ditched linear feature is likely to be part of a trackway.

The archaeological nature of these cropmarks is not certain and an agricultural origin is possible. The site is located within an area of clay soils and therefore is less likely to be producing a cropmark response when compared with the surrounding loams and gravels. Also part of the field is being harvested on the aerial photographs and therefore it is possible that the cropmarks have been caused by some recent agricultural activity within the field.
