Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible Roman enclosure and fields are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Beech Farm, Burgh St Peter (S1-S2). Fieldwalking in the vicinity of these cropmarks produced several sherds of Roman pottery, dating to the late first to early second century AD (NHER 16776-7). The site is centred on TM 4851 9291 and is located on the valley side, overlooking the Waveney Valley to the south. Other cropmarks of unknown date were also recorded within this field, see NHER 44920 for details.
In the southeastern corner of the field, centred on TM 4860 9288, is a possible rectangular enclosure, measuring at least 60m by 40m. The southern and eastern parts of the possible enclosure are not visible due to a change of vegetation conditions. The enclosure appears to be defined by a double ditch or trackway. The fragmentary ditches to the north suggest that conjoined or annexed enclosures existed. Ditches following the same alignment as the enclosure have been interpreted as being broadly contemporary. To the west of the possible enclosure is a double ditched linear, probably a trackway. The other linear features recorded are likely to represent fragments of former field boundaries and ditches associated with the enclosure
