NHER 44925 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of enclosure ditches of unknown, but possibly late prehistoric to Roman date

The cropmarks of ditches of unknown, but possibly late prehistoric to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the northwest of Hill House, Staithe Road, Burgh St Pete (S1). The site is centred on TM 4767 9315 and consists of a series of ditch boundaries that may represent part of an enclosure and/or field boundaries. The cropmarks are too fragmentary to offer a definite interpretation regarding function or date. Other cropmarks within the vicinity of this site have been recorded under NHER 36365 and have been interpreted as post medieval field boundaries.

Running from TM 4765 9314 to TM 4770 9314 is a broad L-shaped ditch, up to 2m across, and with a clear causeway or entrance gap towards the western corner. The width of the ditch, possible entrance feature and the rounded corner all suggest an enclosure ditch, rather than a simple field boundary. This potential enclosure measures at least 50m across. This western boundary ditch runs up to a double ditched boundary or trackway 10m to the south. A further 10m to the south of this is another parallel linear. It is not clear whether this ditches are subdivided internal space within an enclosure or perhaps defining a series of agricultural strips. To the west of these features is a longer boundary ditch, which is bisected by the Staithe Road.
