Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible rectangular enclosure of unknown, but possibly Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs in former arable to the south of Oaklands Farm, Aldeby (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 4664 9279. The majority of this site has since been quarried away with the expansion of the Aldeby Quarry. A Roman pot has been found to the south of this area (NHER 15125). This enclosure sits within an area of fragmentary fields and trackways, which are of unknown date, but possibly late prehistoric to Roman date (NHER 44910).
A possible rectangular enclosure is visible, centred on TM 4664 9277, 55m by 50m. A possible trackway or double ditched boundary joins the enclosure to the north. This site is located within the far ground of several oblique aerial photographs and therefore cannot be seen particularly clearly (S1-S2). It is also located within an area of non-archaeological cropmarks caused by the geology and soils, which obscures some parts of the site on some of the photographs. As a result the whole of the enclosure is not clearly visible on any one photograph, rather it became apparent in the composite plan.
S. Massey (NMP), 15 August 2006.
