Map

August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of undated field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the south of College Farm, Aldeby (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 4622 9192. The site consists of a series of fragmentary linear ditches, the majority of which are aligned roughly NE-SW and NW-SE. Discontinuous field systems following the same alignment to the north (NHER 44910, 44923 and 44942) have been interpreted as being late prehistoric to Roman in date. This site is located on the lower edge of the Waveney Valley and overlooking the river and marshes to the south.

The cropmarks are too fragmentary for detailed analysis or interpretation to take place. However at several locations the ditches appear to indicate highly enclosed and subdivided spaces, often measuring approximately 20m across, such as at TM 4618 9183, TM 4624 9191 and TM 4635 9185. These dimensions are quite small for arable fields, although it is possible that these enclosed areas are for stock management or perhaps even domestic purposes. A double ditch separating two field boundaries at TM 4624 9187 may represent a section of trackway running in-between fields or enclosures.
