Map

August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of undated and multi-phase cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs to the north of St Mary’s Road, Aldeby (S1-S4). The site consists of a series of fragmentary linear ditches, the majority of which are likely to be former field boundaries. A possible double ditched enclosure of unknown, but probable Iron Age to Roman date and part of the fragmentary field system of possible late prehistoric to Roman date (NHER 44942), both located within extent of this site, have been recorded separately (NHER 44952). Excavations to the northwest of this site revealed a wealth of Middle Iron Age industrial activity, Roman date ditches, plus possible evidence for Early Saxon occupation (NHER 34099) (S5). These cropmarks are also located in close proximity to a multi-period finds assemblage (NHER 41979), although Roman finds predominate. The site is centred on TM 4588 9254, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground. Some of these cropmarks within the northern part of this site are located within the extraction area of Aldeby Quarry and have therefore been destroyed.

The majority of the features visible within this site are likely to be the remains of field boundaries. None show any definite relationship to one another or have chronologically diagnostic features.
