Full Description
June 2007. Norfolk NMP
A cropmark of an unusual ring ditch of unknown date and function is visible on aerial photographs (S1). This cropmark is centred on TG 3266 0473. The ring ditch is circular in plan with a 2m wide ditch and an external diameter of 18m. Three projections are present extending for up to 2m from the outer side of the ditch. These are equally spaced and lie opposite each other on the north-west and south-east sides of the ring ditch, with a third placed half way between them on the north-east side. A corresponding projection on the south-west side was not visible as a cropmark. A further projection or ditch extends for 5m from the north side of the ring ditch and is located half way between the north-west and north-east projections. Inside the ring ditch is sub-oval pit cropmark measuring 9m by 7m in plan. This ring ditch does not have the appearance of a Bronze Age round barrow and a later origin is likely. Several kilns are shown in this area on Bryant’s 1826 county map (S2) and it is possible that it relates to a post medieval kiln structure. Although it is possible that it could relate to a clay pit, its symmetry suggests that it is unlikely. The cropmark is located in a low-lying position close to the edge of the marsh making it unlikely that it relates to a post mill.
