NHER 49534 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of probable Iron Age to Roman field boundaries

Cropmarks of field boundaries and trackways of possible Iron Age to Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S5). These cropmarks were previously recorded as part of NHER 19520. A sinuous linear double and triple ditch is present on a south-west to north-east alignment. This cropmark extends for approximately 450m in two sections. The north-east section comprises a triple linear ditch. This appears to be a continuation of a double ditch cropmark forming the south-west section of the linear feature. The double ditch has a further double ditch extending to its south-east. These double and triple ditches are likely to be field boundaries, possibly incorporating trackways. A single ditch field boundary is also present on a north-west to south-east alignment in the south of the group. To the north-west of the long field boundary / trackway is a group of incomplete rectilinear enclosures which appear to be related to these field system cropmarks. The field boundaries are likely to be part of a probable Iron Age to Roman field system present 500m to the north-east (NHER 17291) which lies on the same alignment.
