Full Description
May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A pair of possible World War Two defences, potentially spigot mortar emplacements, are visible on aerial photographs to the immediate west of the South Walsham Road and within the grounds of Burlington Hall (S1). The site is centred on TG 3749 1010.
The northern component is located at TG 3746 1019 and consists of a circular pit, 2.5m in diameter, with a slight bank around the outside. The southern structure is located at TG 3753 1001 and consists of a 5-6m diameter circular parched or worn area, with a possible small circular structure or mark within the centre. 0.5-1m in diameter. It is possible that both of these features relate to the former locations of spigot mortar emplacements sited on the edge of the park. Although it is also possible that they relate to animal feeders or similar structures.
S. Massey (NMP), 23 May 2007.
September-October 2006. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of area on proposed route of A47 Blofield to North Burlingham dualling (Area N).
Although the area examined coincided with the southernmost of the two recorded emplacements there was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See report (S2) and NHER 64827 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 29 March 2021.
March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on route of proposed A47 to North Burlingham upgrade works (Area BLO11).
This second survey (which re-examined the area investigated in 2006) also failed to identify any evidence for surviving remains associated with the southern emplacement.
See NHER 64827 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 29 March 2021.
