Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
This cropmark site consists of field boundaries of unknown, but possibly Iron Age to Roman date, visible on aerial photographs within the grounds of Burlington Hall (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3725 1033. The majority of these cropmark ditches are broadly aligned NW-SE and NE-SW and are likely to represent former field boundaries. Finds of an Iron Age, Roman, Saxon and medieval date have been found within this area (NHER 21288, 23288, 23000, 23287 and 30080), although Roman finds appear to predominate. It therefore seems likely that the ditches and field boundaries mapped can be broadly dated to this period.
These enclosures and fields are located to the east and south of other large areas of enclosures and fields (NHER 49445, 49431), also aligned NW-SE and NE-SW. Other groups of possible settlements and agricultural enclosures following this pattern have been identified across a wide area (NHER 18127, 49428), suggesting a once extensive agricultural landscape spreading for several kilometres.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 May 2007.
