Map

This dispersed cropmark site consists of former field boundaries and possible enclosures of unknown, but possibly late prehistoric to Roman date, visible on aerial photographs to the south of Cedar Farm, Upton with Fishley (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 3835 1031. The cropmarks recorded under this number are likely to represent more than one phase, potentially spanning the late prehistoric to Roman periods, although some of the ditches may be later.
The site consists of a dispersed group of ditches, the majority of which are aligned NW-SE or NE-SW, and are likely to represent former field boundaries, and where double ditched, trackways. Many of the cropmarks are quite fragmentary and may represent parts of incomplete rectilinear enclosures, such as at TG 3818 1031. Many of the cropmarks were located within areas with considerable background geological patterning, making identification of archaeological features quite problematic. It is also worth mentioning that many of the cropmarks were only visible on one set of aerial photographs and therefore it is possible that some of the cropmarks may be of dubious archaeological origin. However the features mapped are consistent with other more definite groups of fields and enclosures aligned NW-SE or NE-SW, some of which have been associated with Roman material, such as NHER 11858, 49469.
