Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a series of enclosures and ditches of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Pilson Green, South Walsham (S1-S2). Some components of this site are likely to be post medieval boundaries and drainage ditches, although it is possible that some elements are Roman date, as Roman finds have been recovered from this general vicinity (NHER 36589) The site is centred on TG 3772 1417.
The main component of the site is a polygonal or sub-rectangular ditched enclosure, 18m by 9m, that sits within two other ditches, possibly part of an outer enclosure. The full extent of these features is seemingly masked by alluvium, indicating a period of inundation the post-dates the features. The presence of Roman finds could indicate that the enclosure and at least some of the boundaries are Roman in date.
A group of post medieval buildings are marked on the 1838 South Walsham Tithe map (S3) at this location. These have been removed by the surveying of the Ordnance Survey first edition (1879-1886, 6 inch). None of the cropmarks visible on the aerial photographs appear to relate to the buildings and boundaries marked on the Tithe map, although the parched oblong feature at TG 3773 1415 may relate to the position of a former structure or yard surface.
