Summary

The earthworks and soilmarks of trackways and boundaries of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Burlington Hall. None of the features match up directly with the trackways marked on the 1838 Burlington Tithe map, suggesting that they relate to an earlier layout of possibly pre-date the park landscape

Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and soilmarks of trackways and boundaries of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Burlington Hall (S1-S4). The site is centred on TG 3691 1053. None of the features match up directly with the trackways marked on the 1838 Burlington Tithe map (S5), suggesting that they relate to an earlier layout of possibly pre-date the park landscape. Fragments of medieval pottery have been found in the area of the main hollow way (NHER 8512).
The clearest component of the site is a broad hollow way or track, up to 9.5m wide, to the north of the Hall. This is showing in 1953 as a slight earthwork and soilmarks (S2), by 1989 the features appear to be only showing a soilmarks (S4), indicating that the earthworks have been plough levelled.
S. Massey (NMP), 23 May 2007.

October 2025. HER Enhancement: Forestry Commission Project K.
Elements of the trackways and boundaries of a medieval to post medieval date, discussed above (see above) are visible as low earthworks on visualised lidar data (S6) from a survey flown in 2021. As the lidar survey was flown relatively recently, it is likely that the features still survive as earthworks.
