NHER 44949 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of post medieval field boundaries and enclosures

The cropmarks of post medieval field boundaries and enclosures are visible on aerial photographs to the south of the Benedictine Priory (NHER 10725) at Aldeby (S1-S4). It is possible that some of these boundaries have medieval origins and may be associated with the Priory to the north. A possible continuation of one of the boundaries may be visible as a trackway to the south (NHER 44938). The site is centred on TM 4530 9304.

A series of broad, ditched and slightly curving boundaries divide up the existing field into four sections (S1-S2). A possible enclosure or animal pen is located in the corner of the main field at TM 4524 9308, measuring approximately 25m by 13m. To the immediate north of Money’s Farm is an incomplete rectangular enclosed area, only partially visible due to the adjacent quarried area.

Also visible within this field are a few fragmentary ditches that appear to pre-date the medieval and post medieval landscape. These are likely to be the remains of former field boundaries of unknown date.
