Full Description
June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a trackway or road and field boundaries of possible medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs to the southwest of Surlingham village (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3131 0608.
The main component of the site is parched linear cropmark, 2.5-6m wide, running from Surlingham to the southwest. This is flanked by a narrow ditch to either side. A series of fragmentary perpendicular ditches to either of this road or track are likely to be broadly contemporary field boundaries. It seems most likely that this route is medieval to post medieval in date, although none of these field divisions are marked on the 1839 Tithe map (S3), possibly suggesting that it relates to an earlier layout.
S. Massey (NMP), 23 June 2007.
