Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of multi-period field boundaries, some of which are likely to be Iron Age to Roman in date, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Lingwood village (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3693 0820. The site consists of a dispersed group of fragmentary ditches, the majority of which are likely to be former field boundaries. Finds of Iron Age, Roman, Saxon, and medieval date have been found within the area around this site (NHER 29176, 20247, 38153, 39625) and it has been suggested that Iron Age to Roman settlement took place in this area. It is therefore likely that many of the boundaries mapped are of this date.
S. Massey (NMP), 28 June 2007.

November 2011. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of two adjacent proposed development areas to east of Station Road.
The southern survey area coincided with the two westermost north-east to south-west aligned cropmarks (at TG 3653 0817). There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains.
See report (S3) and NHER 58259 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 February 2022.

April-June 2013. Excavation.
Excavation of site of new primary school to east of Station Road (where the probable enclosure had been identified in 2011).
Although the area investigated didn't coincide with any of the mapped features, two of the excavated ditches were similarly aligned to the westernmost cropmarks in this group. Although these ditches produced no dating evidence themselves they were probably contemporary with another ditch that contained post-medieval roof tile. These features appeared to be unrelated to the various enclosures and other features recorded to the east that were probably associated with an area of medieval and later common-edge settlement.
See report (S4) and NHER 58259 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 21 February 2022.
