Full Description
July 2007. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a large curvilinear enclosure of possible late prehistoric date is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These cropmarks are centred on TG 4225 0457 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 21271. A curving ditch cropmark defines the west and north sides of a large enclosure. The ditch is up to 4m wide and has a single entrance on its west side. The entrance appears to be blocked by a later narrow ditch. The south and east sides of the enclosure are defined by the modern field boundary along the carr woodland on the edge of the marshland. The enclosure occupies a slight knoll on the edge of the upland adjacent to the marshland. It is overlain by cropmarks of a late Iron Age to Roman field system (NHER 21271). It is possible that the enclosure is of late prehistoric (Bronze Age to Iron Age) date. Cropmarks of three pits, with diameters of between 1.5m and 2m, are present in a straight line within the enclosure. It is possible that they are post holes of a structure relating to the enclosure.
