Full Description
June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and structures associated with World War Two searchlight battery are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Church Road, Haddiscoe ((S1)-(S4)). The site is centred on TM 4391 9765.
The main components of the site are two circular structures, 4m in diameter on of which appears to be surrounded by a larger circular area of worn ground. This arrangement has the appearance of a late World War Two searchlight site utilising a radar controlled 150-mm projector mounted on a wheeled trailer. A third circular structure is also suggested by another worn area of ground to the north. A number of rectangular huts and operational buildings are present.
A number of slit trenches are visible around the outskirts of the installation and these may have been dug to act as air raid shelter as well as to defend the site. A pillbox is located alongside the road at TM 4385 9765. This appears to be to type 22 and may have had a central roof mounted gun or periscope, possibly visible in August 1944 (S2).
S. Massey (NMP), 29 June 2007.
