Full Description
June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of possible square ditched enclosure of unknown definite date and a possible funerary function are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Loddon Road, Haddiscoe (S1). The site is centred on TM 4307 9710. This possible square enclosure is located within the area of a Bronze Age round barrow cemetery (NHER 12164). Similarly sized enclosures have tentatively interpreted as being the possible remains of Iron Age or Roman funerary enclosures or square barrows (S2), although this is not certain. A common association of these square cropmarks with round barrows has also been identified. It must also be noted that similarly sized square enclosures have been identified approximately 550m to the east within a more domestic or agricultural context (NHER 49680), again of probable Iron Age to Roman date.
The enclosure measures 7m by 6m and has slightly rounded corners. A causeway may be visible at the southwestern corner, although this may be a break in the cropmark response rather than an original feature.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 June 2007.
