Summary

An extensive and complex cluster of linear and curvilinear features was found during field reconnaisssance survey on the route of a gas pipeline in 2002. The anomalies could represent both agricultural and settlement remains, including a possible track seen in association with ridge and furrow, which had been cut by a large pit-like feature. Sinuous anomalies were found which could have been archaeological (boundaries or hollow ways) or geological. Multi-period finds were recovered, including a flint scraper and medieval and post medieval pottery, building material and buckles.

Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline. Plot number 46.
See NHER 37614 for umbrella number for pipeline.
The middle of this area was traversed by an extensive and complex cluster of linear and curvilinear features which indicated at least two phases of activity. A possible track correlated with a cropmark which had been recorded in association with a cropmark of an enclosure (NHER 18311). The possible track was seen in association with ridge and furrow, which had been cut by a large pit-like feature. The diffuse, sinuous anomalies could have been archaeological (boundaries or hollow ways) or geological. Raised susceptibility readings and pit-like features or localised, burnt deposits were identified. The anomalies could represent both agricultural and settlement remains.
Fieldwalking recovered worked flints, including a scraper; a 7th century escuteon from a hanging bowl, medieval and post medieval pottery and building material; a medieval coin, buckle and horse harness pendant; and a post medieval buckle.
The overall evidence indicated that the probable settlement extended into this area.
