Summary

The corner of a large rectangular enclosure with associated internal curvilinear features was found during geophysical survey between 2002 and 2003. The function of the site is uncertain but the morphology suggests a high status Roman structure rather than a moated site. A number of linear and curvilinear anomalies appeared to represent elements of field systems, which pre- and post-dated the enclosure.

Map

November 2002 - January 2003. Geophysical, metal detecting and fieldwalking survey. Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline. Plot number 72.
Geophysical survey recorded the southeast corner of a large rectangular enclosure with associated internal curvilinear features. This was at the exact location of NHER 12993, which has been interpreted as a moated site or an early field system. Although the function of the site is still uncertain, the morphology suggests a high status Roman structure rather than a moated site. However, magnetic susceptibility levels in this area were only slightly raised, indicating that any occupation could not have been intensive or long term. A number of linear and curvilinear anomalies appeared to represent elements of field systems, which pre- and post-dated the enclosure. One of the linear features may correspond with a possible field boundary on the Swafield 1839 Tithe map (S1). Fieldwalking survey recovered a worked flint flake and post medieval pot sherds and building material.

Please note, NHER 12993 is recorded as 'Cropmark of long narrow rectangle, angled northwest to southeast, with possible adjoining linear features' with no interpretation or date suggested.
