Summary

Geophysical survey detected linear anomalies on the route of a gas pipeline. At least one small enclosure appeared to be represented. A possible circular anomaly could be the remains of a structure and the most distinct linear anomalies seemed to correlate with former field boundaries. Fieldwalking recovered burnt and worked flints and densities of medieval and post medieval material which may be significant, including pottery and ceramic building material.

Map

November 2002 - January 2003. Geophysical, metal detecting and fieldwalking survey. Bacton to King's Lynn Transco pipeline plot 20.
Geophysical survey detected linear anomalies and at least one small enclosure appeared to be represented. A possible circular anomaly could be the remains of a structure however this was not confirmed by magnetic susceptibility readings, which were low. The most distinct linear anomalies seemed to correlate with former field boundaries shown on the 1885 ordnance survey map (S1) and 1839 tithe map (S2), and some may relate to cropmarks of ditches.
Fieldwalking recovered burnt and worked flints and densities of medieval and post-medieval material which may be significant, including pottery and ceramic building material. They may relate to earthworks and cropmarks of medieval houses (NHER 29499) to the east. Metal detecting found a post-medieval lead pistol ball.
See (S4).
