Summary

Metal detecting here during 1996 recovered three unusual metal objects. The earliest was a carved and decorated flat circular object of Early Saxon date. The others were an early post medieval eight pointed star and a post medieval mask with detailed and grotesque features.

1996. Metal detecting.
Early post medieval object: eight pointed star, off centre hole and eight other holes. ?Leaf decoration (worn) on each face at each point. ?Function ?Belt fitting.

Found by [1]. Information from [2]. In area of previous find.
Early Saxon flat circular object with central perforation blocked by iron corrosion. Wide border with no gilding. Chip-carved, gilded central panel, of a beaded ridge around a circle of twelve groups of three radiating ridges. An inner beaded ridge
surrounds the central hole. The British Museum think possibly linked to late 5th century/early 6th century geometric button brooches, but more likely a late 6th century belt mount. Some peculiar ?solder on reverse.

2003. Metal detecting.
Post medieval lead hollow-cast mask, perhaps a toy. Detailed grotesque features with prominent eyes, nose, forehead and cheekbones, stylised hair and beard, open pierced mouth with exaggerated lips. 20mm by 30mm. Scar from casting sprue
on reverse.
