Summary

No archaeological finds or features were encountered during an evaluation here in 2007. A large reinforced concrete structure was encountered in the evaluation trench. It is possible that the defensive ditch which surrounded Norwich north of the River Wensum in the Late Saxon period survives beneath this structure, but it was not possible to investigate this.

Map

March 2007. Desk-based Assessment.
The site is located within the Late Saxon town and the medieval city walls, and therefore the potential for archaeological finds and features is significant. The northern gate of the Late Saxon town may have been located within the development area. During the medieval period the nature of the area was predominantly industrial, including iron-working.
See report (S1) for further details.

September-November 2007. Trial Trench and Borehole Survey.
Evaluation of area to be affected by proposed redevelopment of Anglia Square (Area 2; Trench 13 and Window Samples 10-15).
Trench 13:
This trench was positioned to attempt to locate the Late Saxon defensive ditch, based on the results of a series of window samples. Machine excavation revealed the remains of a substantial reinforced concrete structure. It was not possible to remove this from the trench. However, it is still possible that the Late Saxon defensive ditch is buried beneath this structure.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
See NHERs 50581, 50583-50584 and 50586 for information on Trenches 1-9 and 12.
The associated archive has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.235).
