Summary

Excavations in 2006 revealed an eroded layer containing large numbers of Roman jars. The most likely explanation for this deposit is that it was formed through the erosion of a roadside cremation cemetery to the east of the site. No other Roman features were encountered during the excavation, suggesting the site was largely abandoned in the Roman period.

Map

July - October 2006. Excavation.
The Roman phase at Laurel Farm was concentrated in Area D, with some finds from Areas B and C. The Roman evidence consisted of an eroded layer containing large quantities of Roman jars. It is unclear what this layer represents, but it is possibly the remains of a roadside cremation cemetery to the east of the site. No other evidence was recorded to further support this conclusion. A total lack of Roman building materials suggests that there were no permanent structures on this site. The site appears to have been sporadically used for dumping in the Roman period, as is suggested by a pit and a dumped layer containing Roman pottery.
See (S1) for further details.

This site is located immediately northwest of three Roman pottery kilns, one of which has been excavated (NHER 31108). This is likely the origin of the dumped material noted above.
