Summary

An archaeological evaluation carried was undertaken on this site in late 2007. This revealed a series of medieval rubbish and quarry pits, sealed beneath what appeared to be a former cultivation soil. This soil deposit was cut by the remains of 18th- and 19th-century buildings. These foundations were truncated by structural features associated with a 20th-century factory.

November-December 2007. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The nineteen trial trenches excavated revealed a consistent pattern of medieval rubbish and quarry pits being sealed by a 15th-16th century soil layer (possibly representing cultivation soil).
The footings of 18th- and 19th-century buildings were cut into the possible cultivation soil. These footings were truncated by foundations and other structural features associated with a shoe factory that was built in 1926.
The finds recovered included two residual Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint blades; Late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery (including a very unusual modelled bird in Grimstone ware which was probably a lamp or a salt); a medieval lava quern; 219 clay tobacco pipe fragments; a French jetton; a post-medieval farthing of George II; a 'spatulate' bone tool and an iron nail.
A small group of disarticualted and undatable human bones was also noted.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work was also summarised in (S2).
